Personal Musings for 9/16
Busy Week
Whew. This has been a busy week of blogging. I did a bunch of writing this week and appreciate all of your comments. I was a little burned out by Friday, and so have rested a little.
As my long-time readers will note, I have a tendency to go in phases of certain kinds of posts. This is because of my obsessive nature and perhaps hypnosis performed on me as a child. Whatever the cause, it has been a while since I have posted something really goofy. This will change soon, as I have some “Ask Dr. Rob” questions to catch up on.
You can blame all of this on Kevin, MD, as he has put me in his Power 8 for a number of weeks in a row, and it has put some pressure on me to maintain my ranking. I don’t think goats and llamas do much for one’s power ranking.
Plus, as you have noticed, I have started posting on several recurring topics: the physical exam, top-10 lists, American Medicine, along with “Ask Dr. Rob.” This means that I am generally working on something for each of these topics at once.
Finally, I am just in a particularly un-funny phase, and you would not want to read something about rain gauges or weed-killer.
Butterflies
Mrs. Dr. Rob is quite the naturalist, and likes to collect caterpillars, get them to make a chrysalis, and emerge as butterflies in the bug-keepers we have in our house. While I have no affection for caterpillars, I do enjoy watching them transform. To get Swallowtail butterflies, all you need to do is get some parsley to grow and they will find it and go crazy. We had three Monarchs emerge this morning. You get Monarch caterpillars by having Milkweed growing in your yard.
Cool.
Knews
If you have not noticed, I have a feed for Knudsen’s News on my side bar. Do go over and visit Zoo Knudsen as he gives us a different take on the news. You will be so glad you went.
Grand Rounds
I will be hosting Grand Rounds coming up on October 3 (the big Grand Rounds). This will mean I will soon put up a poll for themes for grand rounds. If you have suggestions, please give them now.
Podcast
Keep your ears open for a possible podcast coming up with myself and another medical blogger who has a similar sense of humor.

I can hardly wait for this podcast to become reality. I’m certain I know who it is, that will be your partner in crime. You two will have a great time, and I bet all of us will too.

A podcast? Will the old ticker be able to handle this? Like Monty Python and the Flying Circus, American style, coming back.

What a busy boy you are. I wish I had that energy, not to mention breadth of talent. Meanwhile the Power 8 thing (and the whole list/ranking concept) is weird, isn’t it? It’d be nice if there were no such things, but once bitten…
I’m gonna hate it when I reach my denoument and have to watch the death spriral.
As to GR: how about “writing related to medicine in some way.”

As for a theme for GR, YOU have written compellingly about keeping an open mind when all the research isn’t in, when there are not clear-cut answers to questions, when there is resistance to dogma . . . when you have to go on practicing on a daily basis and you don’t have time for exhaustive research. Therefore, how about research v practice? Or keeping an open mind till we have absolute certainty (or what passes for certainty)? Or patients who defy and resist research? Or any/all of the dogmas you had in that post—”All children should be immunized . . . etc.”
Okaythen.
